For Immediate Release: From Crisis to Community, BCHS Celebrates @ BAM, 6/2
A community grows in Brooklyn - BCHS marks its 30th anniversary.
BROOKLYN, NY, May 21, 2009 /Art and Artists PR News/ -- Celebrate an unwavering commitment to ending homelessness in Brooklyn at the annual Fashion on Fulton and Friends gala benefiting Brooklyn Community Housing and Services (BCHS), on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the thriving urban arts center, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).
For 30 years, BCHS has been Brooklyn's leader in the provision of supportive housing and services to the homeless, and it is proud to honor the outstanding achievements and dedication of other esteemed Brooklynites: Mo Vaughn & Eugene Schneur of Omni New York LLC, who provide high quality, expertly managed affordable housing in historically underserved areas, by focusing not only on the real estate aspect of development, but also on the social aspect of community revitalization; Vahap Avsar and Lexy Funk of Brooklyn Industries, a leading 'namesake' fashion label and design company whose credo LIVE, WORK, CREATE, reflects the innovative and affirming spirit of the urban artist and whose work has brought Brooklyn's diverse and rich culture to a worldwide audience; and Elise Long of Spoke the Hub, Park Slope's most vibrant community performing arts center, who produces thousands of artistic works, with a range of performers, from newborn through octogenarian, and whose mission is to nurture both individual and community health and happiness.
This year is BCHS' 30th Anniversary and the gala's theme, "A Community Grows in Brooklyn," celebrates the simple yet profound philosphy that gave birth to the agency and its mission: every individual is strengthened and can thrive when they are part of a supportive and empowering community.
In 1978, a group of concerned citizens and local clergy saw a burgeoning crisis - the plight of the homeless mentally ill - and felt compelled to act. They formed Brooklyn Community Housing and Services (BCHS) and developed a series of groundbreaking programs that have since saved countless lives, and that marked the organization as a pioneer in the field for decades to come.
Thirty years later, a new crisis has emerged. The number of homeless in New York City has approached record numbers, and those becoming homeless are increasingly fragile and frail. Once more - with new, nationally acclaimed programs focusing on the most difficult to serve populations - BCHS is called to action.
BCHS Executive Director Jeff Nemetsky says, "We have helped thousands who were in crisis achieve independence during these last 30 years, and we are ready to help thousands more in the future; until the day that homelessness no longer exists, and until the day that our local communities are as socially rich, and as economically vital, as possible."
Fashion on Fulton and Friends begins with a cocktail reception and silent auction, featuring exciting donations from all over Brooklyn and Manhattan. The fundraiser is topped with 'style', as Brooklynite, Hostess, Author and Project Runway (Season Four) Designer Carmen Webber presents Brooklyn's finest fashion designers in a comprehensive runway show.
