LateRooms.com - Place Called Home Runs Throughout August at Cairns Gallery

A new photographic exhibition is being held at a Cairns art gallery until the start of September.

CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA, August 05, 2010 /Art and Artists PR News/ -- Place Called Home, a photographic exhibition which takes a look at the lives of indigenous Australians from a remote village in Queensland, runs throughout August and into September at the Cell Art Space in Cairns.

The display provides people staying in Cairns hotels with a unique glimpse into the daily routines and habits of the residents of Mona Mona, a settlement so small that it doesn't even appear on some maps of the state.

Tammy Law, the photojournalism graduate who captured the shots, chose to snap the village after the state government decided to evacuate the village.

Although some 50 people still live there, policymakers have now ceased funding for housing and infrastructure in the area.

"The members of this Indigenous community are fighting to make the best of what they have," the organisers of the exhibition explained.

Ms Law's work is being displayed at the Cell Art Space until September 4th 2010 as part of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, an event which attracted 10,000 people when it first took place last year.

Her previous projects earned her a place on the prestigious Young Artists Mentoring Programme in 2009.

Anyone who heads to the venue to check out Place Called Home will be charged a "minimal fee" on the door.

For more information on this event, visit the Cell Art Space website.
