Kathryn E. Mihelick Showcases Professional Brand through Cambridge Who's Who
Kathryn E. Mihelick was honored as a 'Living Legacy' by the Sacred Dance Guild
STOW, OH, June 10, 2010 /Art and Artists PR News/ -- Kathryn E. Mihelick, Founder and Director of Leaven Dance Company, has been recognized by the Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in dance performance, choreography, and instruction.
A dancer since the age of 3, she received a Master of Arts degree in Theatre and Dance from Kent State University in 1988; holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with minors in French, Psychology, English, and Education from Ohio University, and has completed certification work in Dance/Movement Therapy. She performed professionally with Orchesis Ensemble, Heidt Touring Company and Indianapolis Starlight Musicals, and was resident choreographer for Cleveland's Blossom Music Center Porthouse Theatre.
Ms. Mihelick is an Assistant Professor and served as Coordinator of the Dance Division at Kent State University. She is a member and has served on the Executive Boards of OhioDance and the international Sacred Dance Guild, and is presently on the Advisory Board of the KSU School of Theatre and Dance.
A scholar of sacred and liturgical dance, she has performed, lectured, and presented workshops in Australia, Europe, and Hong Kong. In 1992 she founded Leaven Dance Company, whose work addresses issues of spirituality and worship, peace, justice, healing and wellness. Ms. Mihelick is spearheading an advocacy effort to have dance officially recognized and affirmed as a form for worship by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Her research document, "Position Paper on Issues of Sacred/Liturgical Dance Movement," has been placed on their meeting agenda.
In 1999 she received the Sacred Dance Guild's Honor Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Sacred Dance, and in 2008 was named a "Living Legacy." Other awards include the OhioDance Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of the Dance ArtForm in 2003, and the Akron Area Arts Alliance's 2005 Arts Alive! Award for Outstanding Artist in Dance. Leaven Dance Company's work has been recognized and supported by grants from the Ohio Arts Council, the GAR Foundation and the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation.
