Back-Op Bricklayer Builds New Career as an Artist

A bricklayer who has been forced to stop building because of a serious injury to his back has begun a new career as an artist.

RICKMANSWORTH, ENGLAND, June 23, 2011 /Art and Artists PR News/ -- A London bricklayer who was warned by his surgeon that he could end up back on the operating table if he continued working as a builder is swapping his trowel for a fine art paintbrush.

Dean Moone, 39, underwent surgery twice after suffering a prolapsed disc and was told by doctors to "find a different career or face living with a metal plate or rod in the spine."

It was during his ten-week recuperation period that he turned to a long-held hobby to keep him occupied.

"I can't lay bricks anymore, it's as simple as that," says Mr Moone, who trained as a bricklayer at the age of 16 and has been self-employed ever since.

"After my second op, I had to re-think my options. I formed a new building company with a partner, which will see me pricing jobs, project managing and sub-contracting most of the work itself.

"But I found myself with all this spare time. I was so bored, I had to do something, so I turned to art."

Mr Moone quickly built up a portfolio of work and was encouraged when his girlfriend posted one of his pieces on Facebook.

"The response was great," he says, "very encouraging - especially when I sold my first couple of pieces. I never shouted about being able to draw and paint and I don't think many of my friends even knew I could. They tell me I have a unique style."

And it wasn't long before his artwork had its own page on the world's biggest social network - Facebook.com/DeanMooneArtwork. Mr Moone has now also launched a dedicated website, DeanMooneArtwork.co.uk, and a Twitter profile.

"I knew nothing about computers and the internet but I'm really getting into it now," he says. "But I never thought I'd swap my trowel for a paintbrush!"
