15-Year-Old Aditi Ahuja Performs Arangetram in New York City's Carnegie Hall

New York, NY - Aditi Ahuja, a 15-year-old sophomore at the Riverdale Country School performed Arangetram on October 7th at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

NEW YORK, NY, October 13, 2011 /Art and Artists PR News/ -- Aditi Ahuja, a 15-year-old sophomore at the Riverdale Country School performed Arangetram on October 7th at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. The evening included Melaprapti, Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Solkam, Padavarnam, Bhajan, Keertnam and Tillana, all flawlessly performed by Aditi.

Aditi's teacher, Guru Swati Gupte Bhise, recited program notes, explaining in a detailed manner the meaning of hand and eye gestures that are characteristic of the Bharatnatyam.

Aditi has been learning Bharatnatyam since she was six years old. "Bharatanatyam has always been a bittersweet experience for me, and at many times, feeling more bitter than sweet," Aditi said after the performance. "To many who accidentally asked, 'What is Bharatanatyam like?' they would get a long-winded answer explaining how difficult it is. They would learn of all of my aches and pains, and how tiring each class is. Then I would teach them a step or two and force them to sit in aramandhi to prove my point," Aditi explained. But during the recent months leading up to Aditi's Arangetram, her view of this art form has changed. "Of course, on a shallow level, my body still ached, even more than before due to the increased intensity of the practice menu. But along with the feelings of fatigue and pain came a sense of accomplishment," Aditi said.
In preparation for her big debut at the Carnegie Hall, Aditi went to Goa for two weeks to immerse herself in the culture and practice of Bharatnatyam. Her daily routine there included studying for three hours with Guru Goswami, a renowned professor of Bharatanatyam from the ancient Kalakshetra tradition who has taught for 27 years. After a short lunch break, Aditi would have another two-hour lesson with Guru Swati Bhise.

In addition to Bharatnatyam, Aditi has also studied the cello intensively since age six under David Krieger and is a student at Hoff-Barthelson Music School where she plays in the Festival Orchestra. She has performed at the Summit Music Festival in New York, the Burgos International Music Festival in Spain, the International Academy of Music festival Castlenuevo di Garfagnana in Italy and the International Music Academy in St. Petersburg in Russia. She also plays chamber music with the New York Youth Symphony.

Aditi's parents, Tania and Anilesh Ahuja, say, "We are very proud of Aditi and what she has accomplished at such a young age. She is an exceptionally disciplined person who can do whatever she wants if she sets her mind to it."
